Gerling, Austria isn’t the usual destination for holiday travellers. It is located near Saltzberg which is much more popular. However, Gerling has fantastic places to stay and things to do nearby. Krimmel’s impressive waterfalls are visible from the Gerlos Alpine road. There are several steps down the falls which combine to a total distance of a 380 meters fall. They are the fifth highest waterfalls in the world and the highest in Europe. An enjoyable hiking path travels along the waterfalls winding to the top. It provides amazing views of the falls from several vantage points. The sun forms rainbows in the mist from the rushing waters. It does take some endurance and time to reach the top of the waterfall at 430 meters.
The Hintertuxer Gletscher (Hintertux Glacier) is the home of one of Europe’s biggest year-round skiing destinations. High-tech lifts can carry 3,000 skiers an hour from the bottom five villages to the top where even summer skiing is availablee. For non-skiers there are more than 250 kilometres of hiking trails and other activities such as paragliding, canyon climbing, flying fox, and caving. At Hintertuxer those who love romantic, wild mountains, powder skiing, and views of endless peaks find them all.
KletterGarten is a fantastic climbing area with “rock” cliffs, hanging rope bridges and holding lines. For a few euros each member of the family experiences climbing every way imaginable. One Sunday a month a “Night in the Trees” provides a climb in the wild forest, meals cooked over a campfire, supervised sleeping on platforms in the treetops and open air, and a breakfast at a woodland inn.
Schloss Goldegg is a great medieval castle with a marvelous restaurant on site. Throughout the year various cultural events take place there which are well worth attending. One of these is the Goldegger Blues & Folk Days. This is a two-day benefit open-air concert highlighting four or five bands each night impressing with folk music and blues.
